7. how does a refrigerator works?
You may be wondering how the vegetable fruits and foods inside the fridge get cooled below the room temperature right?
It is a well-known fact that when a hot object is kept inside the room, it will start to cool because ‘heat’ from the hot body is transferred to a low temperature room environment.
When the ‘hot object temperature’ becomes equal to a ‘room temperature’, heat transfer from that hot body, ends. It means, further cooling of that object i.e below the room temperature is not possible
Because there is no temperature difference and also heat cannot move from a cold body to a hot body in order to further cool the cold body.
If so, then how does the stuff inside the fridge get cooled below room temperature?
This is possible according to the second law of thermodynamics! It states that heat can move from a cold body to a hot body by a ‘System’ if a ‘work’ is added to that ‘system’.
In the case of a refrigerator, ‘system’ is refrigerator and ‘work’ is added to this system through a compressor.
Hence, it is possible to transfer the heat from the stuff inside the refrigerator, to a high temperature room environment in order to cool the stuff inside the fridge to below the room temperature

Here no fan is used to circulate the air. This type of air circulation is called natural convection.
10.2 frost free refrigerator
In this refrigerator circulation of air inside the refrigerator is done forcibly by using a fan. This type of air circulation is called forced convection.
Also, the refrigerator is called frost free because, in the case of forced convection, frosting of the condensate in the freezer will not form.

In the case of a direct cool refrigerator, ice will form on the freezer surface because of freezing of the condensate in it.

Defrosting can be done manually either by switching off the power supply to the refrigerator and then turning on the supply after the Frost is completely melted out from the freezer surface or by pressing the defrost button provided in the refrigerator (Only few direct cool refrigerators have that button).
To increase the speed of the defrosting process, keep the bowl of hot water inside the freezer.
